Thanksgiving is tomorrow. Along with Thanksgiving comes the Flying Feather, The Turkey Trot…you get the idea. In most towns and cities you will find a 5k going on the morning of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving in Dublin, Ohio is usually pretty chilly. So it might be hard to get your butt out of bed just to run 3+ miles first thing in the morning. I myself do enjoy running, however, morning runs are always the hardest for me. Even though I am a morning person I don’t think my body gets the message until about 10am. My legs just want to sleep! But once you get going it does feel great! You feel the crisp air going into your lungs and hear your feet on the pavement (if there isn’t any snow!). Running is a great stress reliever. The nice thing about mini-marathons, or any marathon for that matter, you know you’re not going to win. You are not trying to beat the person next to you. You just want to finish and hopefully do it in a decent time.
Once you reach the finish line with you family and friends next to you, they usually award you with a medal, pumpkin pie and a bottle of wine! Now, that might just be the reason you need to get your butt out of bed. A free bottle of wine! You can’t beat that. Another great reason to do the run is it probably will give you a good start to the day considering you are going to be eating tons of food today. So when you indulge in a piece of pumpkin pie….and a piece of apple pie….and a piece of pecan pie….and a piece of chocolate pie….and a slice of pumpkin roll….you won’t feel quite as bad!
If you are running a 5k tomorrow….you might be getting some pre-race jitters that might interrupting your sleep. That is completely normal and you shouldn’t let that interfere with your race. Hopefully you got a good night’s sleep last night. Relax today and keep it low key for your race tomorrow. And try your best to get a good night’s sleep tonight.
Come to think of it, they should have the Flying Feather/Turkey Trot the day AFTER Thanksgiving. And they should probably double it to a 10k. Now that would definitely help you shed all those pieces of pie you ate the day before! But then again, that would interfere with Black Friday…which is a whole other beast.
So good luck to all of you that are getting up early tomorrow and hitting the pavement. If this is your first 5k or your 100th it’s always a great experience. I hope it isn’t too cold and you enjoy the run with your family and friends. And remember…just keep running towards the finish line. There are some great prizes at the finish line! Including the fact that you did it and now you should just keep on running home to indulge in your Thanksgiving Feast!
