Christmas is about giving. Most of us give to our close friends and family. Most of us are lucky enough to be able to afford to get gifts and food during the holiday season. Sure we all have a "budget" we have to stick to, but what if your "budget" didn't include and gifts for your children or family. And your budget was just enough to feed your family, if that. Well, this is the time of year that you can help out, if you are able to.
The thought of a child waking up on Christmas morning without one single present breaks my heart. And these children typically don't expect anything. But if you can brighten the season for a family in need, I highly recommend it. Even people in Dublin, need help this time of year. When you give back to someone who truly needs it, it warms your heart. When you see them receive the gifts and they are generally so grateful, it is a magical feeling.
So as you are buying your gifts this year, put a little bit aside for someone who really needs it! Many of the families may have lot a job this year and are put in a tough situation. Other families have brought foster children into their home, such as grandparents who take in their grandchildren when parents are not able to care for them. Many grandparents are on fixed incomes and do not have the extra funds to purchase gifts. What do you say to a child when they say, "it's ok Grandma, Santa will bring it for me." That would break anyone's heart.
But it's programs like Adopt a family, that can brighten the holiday for these families.
There are many organizations that you can work with to adopt a family or child. While the families to be adopted this season already were chosen though the Salvation Army, if you would like to take part in the Salvation Army's Christmas Cheer program and request a basket of food and toy, call 614-221-6561 extension 600 or go to http://www.salvationarmycolumbus.org/.
Don't forget that this program is not only for gifts for the children. While that is a major part of the Adopt a Family program, please remember that these families usually are struggling to feed their family too. Sitting down to eat a Christmas meal as a family is priceless. Most of these families do not have the traditional foods to enjoy this meal. This is where you can come in again.
The Christmas Cheer program is a food and toy distribution program where families receive a Christmas Dinner food box that includes a chicken, stuffing, potatoes, apples, corn, milk, butter, yams, applesauce and cookies. It also includes a toy for every child younger than 13 years.
I hope you and your family all have a wonderful holiday. Please remember how lucky you are to have each other in your life. Cherish every moment with them and really enjoy the spirit of Christmas. After all, family is what it is all about.
